The concept
Shagging Sheep is not a band as such. It is more like a studio project where playing
as well as most of the composing and arranging is being improvised. The following set
of «rules» give a rough description of the idea:
- As much as possible of each song should be composed and arranged spontaneous
and in collaboration. The point is mutual inspiration: one person's idea
should give the others new ideas, and so on.
- It is OK to base the music on some simple foundation made in advance,
e.g. a groove or some sketchy chords. It is important, however, that
this basis is kept simple. The purpose is to inspire new ideas - not to
impose restrictions upon them. The group is free to change or reject the
basis.
- The number of takes when recording should be limited.
- It's generally not allowed to make major changes afterwards, except
correcting errors, removing noise, etc. However, time limits may require that
some tracks are completed afterwards, by one or more of the members. Such
additions must however be agreed upon by all contributors to the song.
- Lyrics should be written at the spot.
- The musicians are encouraged to exchange instruments.
- The music may alternatively be made as a «relay», i.e. each musician
contributes in turns (sending files through the Internet). In this case one is not
allowed to make changes in previous contributions from the others. Here too, one
should be careful not to do too much in each round.
- Humor should be taken very seriously.
- Alcohol is not mandatory, but should be utilized whenever practicable.
The statutes
- The name Shagging Sheep
(TM) implies that the music is made in accordance to the rules listed
above, and that at least two of the members have contributed.
- The project is runned according to anarchistic principles. Sure, we are sheep, but we
don't need leaders!
- Any possible income will be used entirely for internal welfare purposes.
- Shagging Sheep do not give concerts, especially not at «rock against drugs»
events.
